In the very heart of Pleternica, there is a Shrine of Our Lady of Tears, proudly exalted and uplifted, reaching for the stars in the sky.

It is a miraculous place of gathering, prayer, peace and quiet… The history of the Shrine of Our Lady of Tears reaches all the way back to the year 1955 when believers started gathering again on the foundations of destroyed parish church of St. Nicholas in honor of a miraculous event, when the relief of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, made of plaster, cried human tears in 1953 in Syracuse, Sicily. Year after year, a growing number of believers began to arrive to Pleternica, and the Archbishop of Syracuse brought a blessed painting of Our Lady of Tears as a gift to the Pleternica parish in 1958, together with the cotton wool which touched the miraculous relief. On the 31st of August, 2005, Pleternica was declared the diocesan and the Croatian Marian shrine.
