Pleternica is historically known as a market place, educational and cultural centre. Today, the Town of Pleternica has a population of 11 323 who cherish their rich cultural and historical heritage which they show the best through “Lidas” days. First mention of Pleternica dates back to 1355, when it is referred to as Pleternik and St Nicholas by the parish church of St Nicholas who is the protector of the town today. There are written evidence of establishing an Elementary School in Pleternica in the year 1779, and of Voluntary Fire Brigade in 1892. In the beginning of the 20th century, Songster Society (Croatian Hawk), Croatian Reading Room Society and a Library, which is successful and active in its librarianship function today, were established. Today, the Town of Pleternica is well connected by roads and railroads. Economic growth thanks to three business support institutions that operate in synergy with the City. Nature lovers can take a hike through the surrounding hill sides, glades and forests depending on weather they prefer hunting or fishing, that is, other alluring activities of rural tourism. |
