Požega-Slavonia County shatters the usual misconception of flat Slavonia, because this relatively small area boasts plains with fertile fields, mountains and hills the foots of which are covered in renowned vineyards, as well as forests, green oases with rich flora and fauna, attractive excursion, fishing and hunting sites. With all the natural riches of this area, the county has a long history, a proof of which are numerous archeological sites and findings, and what is particularly interesting is that Požega valley was called VALLIS AUREA- the Golden Valley already in the Roman times. Going from west eastwards, you can visit LIPIK- the home of proud Lipizzaner horses and the spring of therapeutic thermal waters. Next is PAKRAC, renowned for the medieval coin mint (moneta banalis-banovac); POŽEGA, which is nowadays the administrative and cultural center of the County; PLETERNICA, a well known pilgrimage site of the Lady of Tears. Furthermore, there is KUTJEVO, one of the most prominent wine centers in Croatia with vineyard and wine cellar tradition that spans from 1232; KAPTOL, which was the center of the Hallstatt culture during the late Iron Age; and VELIKA, a point of entry into Papuk Nature Park, which recently received the status of a European geo-park due to its geological versatility. In Čaglin area, in the heart of Dilj Mountain, is a well-known, and recently more and more visited, Sovsko Lake, the only remnant of the prehistoric Pannonian Sea. |
